"Sound Of The Underground" was the hotly anticipated debut album from Britain's then-newest girl group. Including the huge hit singles "Sound Of The Underground" and "No Good Advice", the album was tipped to be a big success. Released on 26th May 2003, it went straight in at #2 on the album charts, and was only beaten to the top by Justin Timberlake's "Justified" album. It sold 37,000 copies in its first week. Despite the strong start, the album dropped down the chart at an alarming rate and fell out of the Top 75 after just 5 weeks of sale. By the time the third single "Life Got Cold" was released, the album had sold fewer than 100,000 copies - a big disappointment. Thankfully with the new single, the album managed to climb back into the Top 20. However, it quickly dropped back down the chart again. With only 150,000 copies sold after half a year, something had to be done to increase the sales.
Polydor decided to re-issue the album in time for the Christmas market after the release of a brand new single "Jump", which wasn't on the first edition of the album. Re-released in early December 2003, the album re-entered the charts at #42. This wasn't too much of a disaster - due to such high Christmas sales for albums, it had actually sold a respectable 26,000 copies to reach the position, their 2nd highest weekly total for the album, and usually enough to ensure a Top 10 position in other months of the year. The re-released album stayed in the the Top 50 over the Christmas period, shifting a further 150,000 copies at a much quicker rate than the former edition of the album, but by the new year the album's sales had dried up.
In total the album has sold just over 330,000 copies in the UK. The album achieved a Platinum Disc in 2003 and was the 76th best selling album of that year. The album has spent 20 weeks in the Top 75, which is their longest chart run so far despite being their lowest selling album. |
