"What Will The Neighbours Say?", Girls Aloud's second album, was released at the end of November 2004. Already boasting three massive hit singles ("Jump" - #2, "The Show" - #2, "Love Machine" - #2) and launched off the back of the #1 single "I'll Stand By You", big things were expected for the album. However, it disappointed fans when "What Will The Neighbours Say?" only entered at #6 - their first ever release not to reach the Top 5. But the disappointment didn't last for long, as it was revealed that they had reached this position with an unprecedented first week sales of 85,000 copies, a huge sales figure that put the opening week of their previous album "Sound Of The Underground" to shame. "What Will The Neighbours Say?" continued to sell extremely well over the Christmas period and ended 2004 with sales just short of 400,000 copies - meaning in just one month they had outsold their debut album, which with over 18 months of sale had only sold about three quarters of that figure. With just 5 weeks on sale, their 2nd album became the 44th best selling album of 2004, and also went on to become the 136th best selling album of 2005. The overwhelming response to the album was confirmation to Girls Aloud and their management that the group were ready to go on tour. Their first UK tour, named after the album, took place in May/June 2005 and received favourable reviews from critics. It proved to doubters that the girls could indeed sing - a fact that had somehow been forgotten, despite the fact the group had been formed through a talent show! Unfortunately the album only managed 17 weeks on the chart, due to the fact that just one more single was released after it, thus not keeping up momentum. This single was "Wake Me Up", which reached #4 on the singles chart. To date the album has sold between 560,000 & 570,000 copies, making it their biggest selling studio album to date. It achieved 2xPlatinum status. |
