It was the duet people doubted would ever happen - but in late 2006, rumours were abounding that the UK's two biggest girl groups would unite for 2007's Comic Relief single.  This was confirmed when each group's website sent out emails inviting fans to join them on their video shoot.

The video was shot in early January, in three stages.  Girls Aloud did their shoot without all members being present - Cheryl, Nicola & Kimberley shot their part of the video, whilst Nadine & Sarah did so at a later date, and would be super imposed next to the other three girls.  Sugababes also filmed their part of the video separately.  The video was premiered on 3rd February 2007, and sees the two girl groups having a sound off with each other - each girl group is in an individual room, separated by a wall.  There is also a catwalk scene.

As far the song itself, it is a cover of Run DMC & Aerosmith's Walk This Way, a huge in the 1980s.  The girls, with a slight lyric change, reworked the song to show off every member's vocals.

Released on March 12th 2007, with proceeds going towards Comic Relief, the single rocketed to #1 with sales of 51,500 - rather low compared to previous Comic Relief singles, but still giving Girls Aloud's a long awaited 3rd #1.  It was Girls Aloud's first release to chart on the strength of just one physical format.

The single experienced a very short chart life, spending just 6 weeks in the Top 75 - awful for a #1 single, let alone a Comic Relief single.  It sold just over 100,000 copies in total, making it the worst selling #1 single for Girls Aloud, the Sugababes and a Comic Relief single.

'Walk This Way' was somewhat overshadowed by another single released for Comic Relief this year.  The Proclaimers featuring Brian Potter & Andy Pipkin's re-released version of 'I'm Gonna Be 500 Miles' spent 3 weeks at #1, selling nearly three times the amount of copies.
