After being formed on "Popstars: The Rivals", Girls Aloud's first ever single was "Sound Of The Underground". It was chosen to represent the girls in their bid to claim the 2002 Christmas #1 spot. As part of the format of the show, a boy band had also been formed to rival the girls. They called themselves One True Voice. As the promotional onslaught began, Girls Aloud used the catchy slogan "Buy Girls, Bye Boys" to help back their campaign. The motto featured on promotional posters and as a sticker on the CD single. The memorable dance routine featuring the girls dancing with microphones, making their video and performances stand out. Another winning factor was the groups sexy, yet inoffensive image. The general opinion was that a girl group would struggle going head to head with a boy band. However, as promotion went on, it became more and more apparent that it was actually One True Voice who were struggling. Girls Aloud had won the support and backing of critics and reviewers alike, and gained many fans. This was proven when Girls Aloud hit the #1 spot with ease, holding off One True Voice by a substantial difference in sales, who had to settle for #2. It was a huge achievement for the girls - not only were they the first ever all-British girl group to enter at #1 with their debut single, they achieved a #1 in the shortest time after formation (just 22 days), and were also the first act ever to have their first single be a Christmas #1. With just 15 days of sale in 2002 it sold enough to be the 17th best selling single of that year, and continued to sell enough in 2003 to be the 21st best selling of that year. The single went Platinum in the UK, selling over 590,000 copies in total, and spent 4 weeks at #1. To date it is Girls Aloud's best selling single. |
